ACC Teams Fare Well in Sears Cup

For the 12th year in a row, Stanford has won the US Sports Academy Directors’ Cup (formerly known as the Sears Cup). However, all but one ACC school placed in the top 50. Additionally, this is the first year an ACC school has broken the top five since Duke did so in 2004-05. That school, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is the only other school, other than Stanford, to win the top prize.

The Cup ranks schools on postseason finishes in its top 10 men and womens teams. Read the rest of this entry »

New UNC Baseball Photos Posted

I have posted some photos when UNC played Florida State in Chapel Hill this year. They can be found here.

I hope to eventually get up some photos of NCSU Baseball. I do have some photos of Andrew Brackman posted playing baseball and basketball.

ACC Lands 3 in NBA 1st Round

Unlike last year, when UNC alone landed 4 in the first round, and the ACC landed 7, the ACC only landed 3 in the first round of the NBA draft. Congrats to Shelden Williams (#5 overall), JJ Redick (#11) and Cedric Simmons (#15).

Compare the ACC’s success in the NBA draft compared to the NFL draft. In the 1st round of the 2006 NFL draft, the ACC placed 12 players. Note though there are 30 1st round spots in the NBA compared to 32 for the NFL.

Put another way, the ACC took 37.5% of the first round spots in the NFL draft and 10% of the NBA first round spots.
To be fair, the NBA draft has more foreign draftees than the NFL.

Over a year ago, Bruce Winkworth made a prediction about the state of UNC Baseball. “Yeah, everyone makes predictions” you say. Well, Bruce is in a unique situation. He has followed ACC baseball since I was probably in diapers. More so, as the media relations director for the NC State baseball team, Bruce has insight that few others do.

Future batteries to charge in seconds?

Currently there are two main methods, accessible to consumers, to store energy: batteries or capacitors. Capacitors have the advantage of being able to charge and discharge energy in a matter of seconds; the disadvantage being they are large and bulky. Batteries are much more compact, but by using chemical reaction to store and discharge power, they take hours to charge and discharge.

4th Inning Dooms UNC in Game 2

UNC was up 5-0 at the bottom on the 3rd and most pundits would have said it was time to just start the trophy presentation for UNC. But in a freakish 4th inning, Oregon State scored seven and they never looked back.

When all was said and done, Oregon won 7-11 to force a third game. UNC and OSU are now tied 1-1 in the best of three and will play again Monday at 7pm ET on ESPN.

Digital camera blocking technology created

Researchers at Georgia Tech have created a prototype device that can make digital camera and video cameras unusable.

The devise is able to detect CCD chips in these devices and targets beam of light at them, casting a bright white light on the chip. This makes the resulting image overexposed.

The UNC baseball team today won the first of three over Oregon State in the College World Series. One more win, and UNC will be the national champion.

UNC won 4-3 with a game winner by Chad Flack (pictures). Flack hit a triple. At the next batter, on a catcher error, Flack stole home base in the 8th, sealing UNC’s victory.

“I screamed for him to go…Fortunately, he had just enough of a secondary lead, and had just enough foot speed - one less cheeseburger - to get in there.” UNC head coach Mike Fox

Tar Heels should not get to excited yet; last year UNC beat Notre Dame 5-1 in the NCAA Regionals, only to loose two days later 3-0 to the same team.
