ACC Teams Fare Well in Sears Cup

For the 12th year in a row, Stanford has won the US Sports Academy Directors’ Cup (formerly known as the Sears Cup). However, all but one ACC school placed in the top 50. Additionally, this is the first year an ACC school has broken the top five since Duke did so in 2004-05. That school, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is the only other school, other than Stanford, to win the top prize.

The Cup ranks schools on postseason finishes in its top 10 men and womens teams.

UNC benefited by strong finishes from its baseball and women’s lacrosse team; Duke by women’s golf and women’s lacrosse. Additionally, Duke’s men’s lacrosse team was almost certain to place in the top 5 in the nation, if not higher. Had their season not been cancelled, Duke could have earned even more points and placed higher. Although, as a UNC alum, I feel that I should point out that a #1 end ranking by Duke men’s lacrosse would probably still not have placed Duke above UNC. UNC also beat Duke in the 2005-06 Carlyle Cup.

Here are the 2005-06 Directors’ Cup Rankings:
#4 UNC-Chapel Hill
#8 Duke
#17 Florida State
#26 Virginia
#27 Maryland
#34 NC State
#39 Clemson
#42 Miami
#44 Wake Forest
#45 Virginia Tech
#50 Georgia Tech
#51 Boston College
